Travel With Your Own Car? 5 Ways to Make the Drive More Comfortable

When you’re traveling from one assignment to the next, the drive can get long, monotonous and tedious. The travel may be fun, but for many, the long drive getting there is not. Hours in the car with the windows shut increases your risk of carbon monoxide buildup in airtight cars. The lack of oxygen causes sleepiness and may result in an accident. Try these tips to make the drive more comfortable and safe.

1. Recirculate or not?  

When you have the heat or air conditioner on, draw air in from the outside unless you’re traveling through heavy traffic. Although your car has a filter, it isn’t able to filter out the pollution from the cars and trucks on the road with you. However, most new cars are airtight. Within an hour with one person in the car, you’ve gone through most of the fresh oxygen and the buildup of carbon monoxide makes you tired.

2. Use your cruise control.

Set your cruise control to save on gas as you travel. Consistent speed uses less gas and costs you less money.

3. Pack snacks and water.

Sometimes while you’re driving, a boost of energy can help keep you focused through the day. Ditch the sugar snack that may upset your stomach and will trigger a quick sugar high followed by a crash. Instead, pack healthy snacks filled with protein and healthy fats, such as seeds and nuts. While you may think fruit and dried fruit are healthy, they are packed with sugar and will give you the same sugar high and crash as sugary snacks and drinks.

Be sure to stay hydrated during your drive. It’s easy to forget to drink, or stop drinking so you can drive longer distances without stopping. When you get dehydrated by just 1% it makes it more difficult to think and impairs your reaction time. Instead, carry water with you in the car and making plans to use the bathroom every time you stop the car.

Make plans to stop every two hours to walk. Sitting for long periods of time may increase your risk of lower leg clots. Movement and stretching every two hours helps keep your blood moving and prevents getting tired. Taking deep breaths, keeping the window open and singing also help stave off fatigue.

4. Get a good night’s rest.

Sleep is as important to your health and wellness as a good diet and hydration. Sleep deprivation increases your risk of accidents and impairs your thinking and reaction time.

5. Don’t count on the radio.

Not every area of the country will have radio signals or have stations you enjoy listening to. Instead, carry your own music or audiobooks to keep your brain thinking. Singing to music also helps the time to pass more quickly and will keep you focused on the road.
