The Latest Resume Tips for Traveling Nurses

Your resume is the first thing your recruiter and employer see. It’s a representation of who you are, your skills and your abilities. If you would like to be hired for the best assignments, it’s essential your resume speaks volumes about your skills, both professionally and personally. With advancing technology, it’s easier to produce an inspired resume that is filled with good content and formatted to please the eye. Employers have a variety of needs that must be filled, and with a growing number of nurses interested in joining the travel field, it is important your resume shines.

There are several mistakes you will want to avoid as you begin to develop a shining example of what a professional resume should look like. Your first mistake is not optimizing the resume for the job and for applicant tracking systems. This means your resume should use words from the job posting to match content and skills. Some employers use an applicant tracking system to help screen resumes and rank the applicants based on content.

In the same vein, it’s important you don’t use one resume for all the jobs you apply to. Each job is unique, and so your resume should be unique to each job. However, this does not mean you have to rewrite everything in the resume, only that you should optimize the content to be specific for the job posting.

Writing a unique and engaging resume may be challenging, but it’s also important you accompany it with a cover letter. Unless the posting states otherwise, cover letters are an important way of communicating your unique skills outside of a formal document. Be sure you and your recruiter have checked and double-checked your resume and your cover letter for spelling and grammar errors. Use bullets when you can, instead of paragraphs as they are easily scannable. Minimize your abbreviations and eliminate the statement, “References available upon request.”

As you format your resume, be sure you include skills you learned on the job or from your education that are quantifiable, called hard skills, as well as your soft skills, sometimes referred to as interpersonal skills. This is a time to list your accomplishments and set modesty aside. Try to include measurable, viable goals, rewards and honors which you attained. Create a list of duties and hard skills for your resume, such as assessing patient and family needs, administering medications or 12 lead placement and interpretation.

You will want to include any professional associations or affiliations, honors, awards or special assignments. Be specific in the degrees and education you have earned as well as any special certifications. Include the name of the school, location, degree and the beginning and completion date. Consider any continuing education you’ve completed in the past 2 years and include any additional skills, such as if you are bilingual.

Unlike other jobs, nurses work around the clock and so your resume should indicate your willingness to work different shifts. Succinctly include any computer skills you might have, programs you may have

worked on and details about the facilities you worked at. Include information about the facility type, trauma designation, if it was a teaching hospital and the number of beds.

Write down these key points for each of the places you’ve worked, and key points about your interpersonal or soft skills. Create an outline for these points and ensure your tone is professional, confident and approachable.

Your next task is to expand this outline with information into a format that is easily readable and scannable. The most common type of resume lists reverse chronological events in which your most current job appears first. There are several companies online who offer simple and more complicated formatting templates in which you can drop your content. Microsoft Office offers several as well. Pick and choose what format may work best for you and then experiment. Remember, the goal of your resume and cover letter are to get you the job and not necessarily to win any creative contests.
